Find your tempo wall
Step 1) Choose a tempo you're comfortable with
So you're trying to master that lick or fill, but you can't quite play it up to speed just yet. The first step is learning to play it at a tempo you're very comfortable at. Make it as slow as you can. We'll speed it up in just a minute. Set that comfortable tempo as the value for your FROM slider.
Step 2) Crank the UP slider
At this point you don't know where your technique falls apart yet. The UP slider defines how many BPM you want to increase, relative to the tempo you just set in the FROM slider. Crank it all the way up, since we're just trying to discover where your tempo wall is at.
Step 3) Set STEP to 1
You're playing at a comfy tempo and we want to quickly go up to the next tempo that starts to feel off. That is your (current) tempo wall. The STEP slider indicates how many bars have to run before tempo ramp increases 1 BPM. Set it to 1 so it increases tempo as fast as possible (1 BPM per bar).
Step 4) Play until you hit your tempo wall
Hit the play button and start playing your musical idea. When your technique starts to fall apart, take note of the tempo. You've learned your tempo wall for playing this musical idea.
DEMOLISH your tempo wall
Step 1) Set FROM to a tempo slightly below your wall
You now know where your tempo wall is at. Set the FROM slider to a value that is slightly below it.
Step 2) Set your target tempo with the UP slider
Now you can use the UP slider to set your target tempo. How much faster than the FROM value do you want to play your musical idea?
Step 3) Increase STEP
By tweaking the STEP value you'll be able to put those reps in so that increasing tempo feels effortless. 16 is a great value for challenging loops. 8 is very good for easier ones. Play with this parameter to find your sweet spot.
Step 4) Play through your wall like it's nothing
Now tempo ramp is all set so you can forget about pressing buttons on your metronome for a while. The indicators on the screen will let you know how long your excercise is going to take. Use the progress bar if you want to speed forward. Go back to tweaking the sliders if it's too challenging. You've now been empowered to demolish that annoying tempo wall.
